NNV is so very fortunate to have members that have lived rich and interesting lives. If you have attended an NNV event, chatted during a volunteer ride service, or had any interaction with an NNV member, we are sure you have heard some amazing stories.
To take advantage of this valuable resource, NNV is initiating a program where members can share their experiences with growing up in the 20th century and living in the 21st century, highlighting family, work, retirement, travel, or whatever the member thinks others would find interesting.
Our idea is to gather small groups of members to talk for 10 minutes about a specific or general topic. A volunteer facilitator will help keep the discussion going. With the member’s permission, some conversations may be recorded and published in the NNV Weekly Update. It is our hope that through publishing members’ stories, we can elevate the voices of older neighbors in our community and spark a change in people’s perception of aging.
This initiative has at its core the thought, expressed by the author Noah Yuval Harari, that storytelling is the superpower of our human species.
The initial event - which we have entitled "Village Voices" - will be held in late January 2025. As we finalize planning, we are interested in hearing members opinions on the concept and whether specific or general topics are preferred. Please share your comments and/or questions with NNV staff at 202-935-6060 or info@nnvdc.org.
Through a centrally-coordinated, local network of screened volunteers and vetted professional providers, Northwest Neighbors Village offers its members transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping assistance, home repairs and handyman help, computer and technology assistance, access to social and cultural activities and more.
