Tips for Enjoying the Snow in DC

The first snowfall of 2025 did not disappoint. We hope you have been enjoying the winter beauty from the warmth and comfort of home. Here are a few reminders of what to know about snow in DC:

Snow Removal - DC residents are required to remove snow and ice from the paved sidewalks, curb ramps and curb cuts abutting their property within the first eight hours of daylight after the end of a winter storm.

Snow Removal Providers - For the safety of our volunteers, Northwest Neighbors Village does not offer volunteer snow removal. However, Serve DC offers a free volunteer snow shoveling service for residents 60 and over. To sign up, call 202-727-7925 or email your request to DCVSP@dc.gov. Information needed to complete the request include: Name, contact number, address & ward. Click here to learn more. Because this service is based on volunteer availability, Serve DC cannot guarantee that a volunteer will be available. NNV members who prefer to hire a contractor, can call the office at 202-935-6060 or info@nnvdc.org to request a list of providers.

Snow Removal Exemption - Qualified residents who are disabled and/or 65 or older are exempt from enforcement with an approved exemption. The exemption is valid for two consecutive snow seasons. Residents must apply every other year to continue the exemption. To learn more and apply for the Sidewalk Shoveling Exemption program, visit their website here. NNV Full members who would like assistance filling out the exemption application may contact the office by email or phone.

Consider Our Furry Friends - If you apply an ice melting product, consider using one with urea to reduce irritation on animals' paws, as well as stomach upset. Experts recommend avoiding products made with rock salt and ingredients like sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and calcium chloride and magnesium chloride. Click here to read more about ice melt options and their impact on animals. And remember, when applying ice melt, a little goes a long way!

Volunteer Service Cancellations - Both members and volunteers who must reschedule a volunteer request or service due to inclement weather can do so by contacting the office at 202-935-6060 or info@nnvdc.org. Please let us know as soon as possible so we can make accommodations accordingly.

Changes to NNV's Programming Schedule - For in-person events that are canceled due to inclement weather, the NNV online calendar will be updated to reflect the cancellation and all registered attendees will be contacted directly. All virtual programming will continue as scheduled unless otherwise noted. Click here to view the NNV calendar.
