May is Older Americans Month. This year’s theme, "Powered by Connection" focuses on the profound impact that meaningful connections have on the well-being and health of older adults. Each week this month, members and volunteers share how their involvement with NNV has powered connections for them.

Neighborhood Chats: Creative connecting during the pandemic and beyond
When the pandemic started in 2020, people were afraid to meet in person. Their precautions came at the cost of isolation and loneliness. In response, NNV volunteers David Cohen and Jerry Burg initiated a safe way to connect through online neighborhood chat groups. Four years later, these groups composed of regular attendees continue to meet bi-weekly to provide support and friendship.
David Cohen shares, “For people undergoing medical care that compromises their immune systems, or those with limited mobility, Zoom still offers a safe, easy way to connect with others.” These chats offer the opportunity to share everything from book suggestions, to hair dresser recommendations, information on community events, assisted living arrangements, and more. Participants in David’s group have supported one another through illness and loss, and ooh and aah over pictures of grandchildren. David notes that friendships have blossomed beyond Zoom, adding, “When people connect with people whose lives they know, in a context of trust, respect, support, friendship, and laughter, life is good.”
With the success of David’s idea, a second group was born. Jerry Burg felt like he needed to do “something” during the challenging time of the pandemic. As the facilitator, Jerry focused on creating a space where people felt comfortable participating and sharing interesting subjects. Over time this approach helped the group build rapport and respect for each other's feelings and ideas. Jerry shares, “A bunch of strangers are now a small community and that makes me feel rewarded.”
Indeed, David and Jerry have fostered meaningful connections among neighbors. Some chat members share how their little group has made a huge difference in their lives.
