From Our Members to You
NNV offers a lot of interesting programming designed to be a resource to our members and our community. Lately, we have had some great discussions on everything from downsizing to emergency planning. Here’s what our savvy members have to say:
Downsizing:
- Downsizing is tiring. Allow no more than 2-3 hours per day toward this task.
- Work on the areas of your home that are least challenging and build up from there.
- Create three piles, one to keep, one to donate, and an “I don’t know” pile to revisit later.
- Be creative with donations. Consider auction houses, used bookstores, museums, and libraries.
- Move managers and professional organizers can be very helpful.
Member quotes:
“Do it consistently and you’ll feel better when you see your progress”
“Do not do this work alone. It’s nice to have another body in the room”
“You mourn as you go through this process”

Planning for a Medical Emergency:
- Make sure someone has a key to your home.
- Keep your cell phone charged and carry it with you. Clothing with pockets helps!
- Prevent emergencies by using nightlights, removing throw rugs, adding grab bars and other safety equipment.
- Don’t underestimate physical symptoms, contact a medical provider when you feel symptoms.
- Keep all of your important information like emergency contacts, diagnoses and medications in your wallet and consider posting a File of Life magnet on your refrigerator. To arrange to pick up a File of Life magnet, contact NNV at 202-935-6060 or info@nnvdc.org.
- Consider hiring an Aging Life Care Manager if you do not have local support.
- If you live alone, arrange for a regular check-in. One of our participants uses the Snug Safety app for daily check-ins and shared, “If I don’t check-in on time, someone calls or ultimately knocks on my door to make sure I’m OK.”
- Technology like smartphones and smart watches can be very helpful in tracking health and storing information that can be useful in an emergency. The Apple Store in Bethesda offers workshops and one-on-one help with using technology for this purpose.
