Join Us for Coffee and Conversation!
By Karen Zuckerstein
For the past several years, a small group of NNV members and volunteers have gathered twice a month at local coffee shops and restaurants for Coffee and Conversation. What a great way to get to know our NNV community! I think we’ve tried nearly every coffee place in our neighborhood. Junction and Bread & Chocolate are popular choices, especially when the weather is nice and we can sit outside. We’ve been to The Den at Politics & Prose, Coffee Nature, Whole Foods, and even an occasional Starbucks. And we’ve enjoyed special coffees at a private home on occasion.
These coffee gatherings offer more than a caffeine boost; they provide an opportunity to connect with your neighbors. NNV member Betsy shares, “Through the morning coffee lead by Karen, I met my piano teacher, Cathy; through Cathy, I met new friends through NNV’s ‘Not a Book Club’. I have enjoyed both activities immensely. I also enjoy learning about various individuals’ backgrounds and how they came to NNV.” Betsy’s experience is not unique to her. To encourage more members to join us, we are proposing a change to the schedule.
The new NNV location at Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church offers a fresh possibility. A bit quieter than a restaurant, it is a very comfortable gathering spot. We will alternate between the NNV space and a restaurant (preferably locations with nice patios as spring arrives). We’ll meet twice a month – on the first Tuesday of the month at the NNV space and two weeks later on Thursday at a local coffee shop. Visit our calendar for more information and to sign up. Coffees in April are on April
Please join me in thanking our informal Coffee and Conversation hosts: Barbara Kagan, Cathy Waldman, Alix McDonough, Janean Mann, Linda Lateana and Morgan Gopnik. Hope to share a coffee with you this Spring!
P.S. Last month, Stephanie Miller, founder of Zero Waste in DC talked with NNV about sustainability. In honor of Earth Month, NNV will share weekly tips that we learned from Stephanie’s presentation. Here’s this week’s tip:
Bring your own travel mug to your favorite coffee shop. You’ll not only reduce the use of single-use materials, but you’ll also avoid the plastic lining seeping into your hot drink. Learn more here.
